TILE MATERIALS

Are ceramic tile variants an excellent choice for walls and flooring?

Absolutely. Ceramic tiles are a versatile and practical option. They’re durable, easy to clean, and available in a wide range of colours, patterns and finishes. This versatility is why ceramic tiles are commonly used for kitchen splashbacks, bathroom walls and laundry areas.

Are ceramic tiles non-slip?

Slip resistance depends on the tile’s finish rather than the ceramic material itself. Gloss finishes can be slippery when wet, while matte or lightly textured finishes provide better grip. For bathroom floors or walkways, we generally recommend matte or textured options.

How do I find out the quantity of ceramic tiles my project needs?

Measure the length and width of the wall or floor in metres, multiply to calculate the total square metres (m²), and allow at least 10% extra for cuts, wastage and spare tiles for future repairs.

Where are ceramic tiles commonly used?

Ceramic tiles are most often used for:

  • Bathroom walls and shower surrounds

  • Kitchen splashbacks

  • Laundry floors and walls

  • Main living area floors when a matte or textured finish is selected

  • Is ceramic tiling good for flooring?

Yes. Ceramic tiles are a popular and practical flooring choice for low-to-medium traffic areas. They’re easy to maintain, family-friendly, and generally more budget-conscious than porcelain or natural stone.

What is special about porcelain tiles?

Porcelain tiles are made from finer clay and fired at higher temperatures than standard ceramic tiles. This process makes them denser, less porous and highly resistant to water, which is why porcelain is commonly used in high-traffic areas, wet spaces and outdoor applications.

Are porcelain tiles better than vitrified tiles?

“Vitrified” refers to a manufacturing process rather than a different tile type. Porcelain tiles are vitrified tiles, meaning they’re fired until they become dense and non-porous.

    Are porcelain tiles waterproof?

While no tile is completely waterproof, porcelain tiles are as close as it gets. With a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, they perform exceptionally well in bathrooms, showers, laundries, pools and other moisture-prone areas.

    Can rain damage porcelain tiles?

No. Thanks to their density and low water absorption, porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for outdoor areas. They can withstand rain, frost and direct sunlight without cracking, fading or warping.

Is marble tile suitable for a home?

Yes. Marble is a luxurious, natural stone that brings a timeless and elegant feel to a space. Each tile is unique, with natural veining that adds character and visual interest.

    Are marble tiles expensive?

Marble is considered a premium material. Its cost reflects the fact that it is quarried natural stone that must be cut and finished. While it’s an investment, the result is a classic, long-lasting finish.

    Is marble floor tile slippery?

Marble can be slippery when polished, especially when wet. For flooring, particularly in kitchens or bathrooms, honed or tumbled finishes are recommended as they provide more grip.

    Is marble good for tiles?

Marble is a beautiful and timeless tile option, but it does require more care than porcelain or ceramic. As a natural stone, it is softer and more porous, meaning it needs proper sealing to help prevent staining and scratching.

    Are marble material tiles cheap?

No. Marble is not considered a low-cost material. While some varieties are more affordable than others, it is generally classified as a luxury product.

How long do marble tiles last?

With correct installation, sealing and ongoing care, marble tiles can last a lifetime. Many historic buildings still feature original marble surfaces that are over 100 years old.

    What are marble tiles?

Marble tiles are cut from natural metamorphic rock formed under heat and pressure. This process creates marble’s distinctive veining and crystalline structure.

    What is a mosaic tile?

Mosaic tiles are small tiles arranged on a mesh backing. They can be made from ceramic, porcelain, glass, stone or a combination of materials and are commonly used as decorative features.

Are mosaic tiles out of style?

No. While certain shapes and patterns trend over time, mosaic tiles remain a timeless design option. They’re best used thoughtfully as feature elements rather than across large surfaces.

Do I need spacers for mosaic tiles?

The individual tiles on each sheet are pre-spaced, but spacers are required between each mosaic sheet to maintain consistent grout lines.

Where are mosaic tiles best used?

    Mosaic tiles are ideal for:

  • Shower niches, benches and curved surfaces

  • Floors where additional grip is beneficial

  • Feature strips or borders

  • Pool interiors and waterlines

  • What is the difference between mosaic tiles and standard tiles?

A standard tile is a single piece, while a mosaic tile comes as a sheet of many small tiles arranged together. Think of a tile as a single brick and a mosaic as a pre-assembled panel.

    What are subway tiles?

Subway tiles are rectangular tiles typically laid in a brick pattern, most commonly in a 1:2 ratio such as 75×150mm or 100×200mm. Their simplicity makes them suitable for both traditional and modern spaces.

Why are they called subway tiles?

The name comes from their original use in the New York City subway system in the early 1900s, where they were chosen for their durability and easy-to-clean surface.

What grout gap is recommended for subway tiles?

For a classic look, a tight grout joint of around 1.5–3mm is commonly recommended. Narrow joints help keep the focus on the tile pattern.

What finishes are available in subway wall tiles?

Subway tiles are available in a range of finishes, including:

  • Gloss

  • Matte

  • Bevelled

  • Crackle

  • Handmade-look

  • How do I choose the right subway tile size?

The classic 75×150mm size works well in most spaces. Larger formats may suit bigger walls or open showers, while smaller tiles work well for compact splashbacks.

Can I use bold colours with subway tiles?

Yes. While white is timeless, subway tiles are a great way to introduce colour, from deep greens and blues to soft pastels.

What materials are used for swimming pool tiling? Pool tiles must withstand constant water and chemical exposure. The most suitable options are glass mosaics and fully vitrified porcelain tiles, both of which have very low water absorption rates. What is the cost of swimming pool tiles? Pool tile costs vary depending on material, size, brand and design. Installation costs, waterproofing, adhesives and grouts should also be factored into the overall budget. What properties should pool tiles have? Pool tiles should offer: Water resistance Chemical resistance Frost resistance Fade resistance Quality pool tiles are specifically designed to handle continuous water exposure and outdoor cond
